The scene is set during the instrumental intro that it's a rainy day; tea is boiling on the stove top. We then peak in a country cottage where a guy and girl sit opposite eachother. Guy is sketching the girl on an artist pad, as she plays along and tries to sit still. Camera close ups on both faces, eyes, drawing, etc. During chorus at "I'll be damned" we catch a glimpse of what they could be doing, i.e. having a pic-nic on a sunny day, riding in a truck with the windows rolled down.
Second verse, girl has made guy pose as she sketches him. During the second chorus "I'll be damned" we see them reveal their sketches of eachother. His is a beautifully drawn sketch of her, her canvas is empty. The rain has stopped. And she's out the door. "Curve ball" and guy stands in doorway as he watches her pull away. More glimpses of a brighter, better day flash by. The door closes. |

The video starts with the girl walking out, the initial confict beginning the treatment. It can then build backwards, from art class where they first met, to getting to know each other, and then to working on the sketches. Modeling for an artist is historically one of the most romantic situations, dating back to the Renaissance. Thus the love and admiration is created for one character, and the situation only distances the other character. She goes first, as we never see the completed work until the final reveal - him modeling first. She models second, allowing her real inner beauty to be reflected outward. He is falling in love with her, then the drawings are revealed to each other. Head hanging as she walks out, he looks at the vision of what he thought he saw. Love. |

She is naive and young, very scatter-brained and unorganized. She is very much still a kid on the inside. She wears whatever clothes she sees first because she has more important things to think about. Her initial idea of him was perfect, nearly god-like. While He is falling in love with her, she is falling in love with the idea of him. She sees him as perfect, flawless, her beginning sketches show him as larger then life but all end up on the floor in crupled piles. As time progresses, she progresses with her drafts and with the realization that who he is isn't who she thought, the sketches get less and less spectacular until we see the empty page and she finally leaves. |
